Damn he looks great! I wish that look would be made available at a mall near me! If that’s how you feel when you see this picture well then thank your local Hot Topic!
Leggings by Lindsey Lohan? Perez Hilton for Hot Topic? Jessica Simpson Shoes? Maternity wear by Nicole Richie!
Look, I get the whole, you gotta get yours mentality. If you can make money by putting your name on leggings, because you wear fucking leggings, good for you. But let’s clear something up. Celebrities are not designers. Not one. Just as Dr. Phil is not a doctor, Lindsey fucking Lohan and Perez Hilton have no idea what it would entail to create a collection from start to finish. They do not render croquis, 2d or otherwise, they are not familiar with the logistics of construction nor the limitations of fabric. In short, they along with all other celebrities are not designers.
They are collaborators. Lets get the terminology right. It’s totally offensive to the people in this world who actually are designers. Contrary to popular belief, it takes more than pointing at a lineup your assistant hands you and saying “Ooh, that’s cute. Put that in my line!”
I do have one exception to the rule, and they go by the name of the Olsen twins. Say what you will, but Elizabeth and James (the low end line) along with The Row (the high end line) are coming out with some of the most beautiful and undeniably relevant shit this year. If you haven’t heard of the lines, it’s because they didn’t mass market the shit and felt no need to collaborate with some other team of designers in the mainstream, i.e. H&M. They love fashion and are knowledgeable and received by the industry in such a way that there was no need for the collaborative crutch.
Other than full house, I give no props and no respect.
I’m sure musicians and thespians alike feel the same way as celebrity culture ravishes through our favorite artistic medium not to mention our livelihoods. All over the world there are models and actors who cannot sing lowering the standards of music, singers and actors coming out with clothing lines that lower the standards of the fashion industry, and singers who are constantly trying to pursue acting careers with in a industry so saturated with talented actors already waiting for their chance to work that we have to ask ourselves- why do we support these ridiculous endeavors thrust upon us via PerezLohanRichieMaddenSimpson? Why?
Next time you see Jessica Simpson shoes at Macy’s, spit on them. Dido for Paris’ new extension line. Lindsey’s new albums on sale at virgin you say? Hide it in back of something good, where mark my words, they will never find it.

I am so glad The Row is your exception. The Fall lookbook (and video) are INCREDIBLE. It makes me want to wear all black and no bra.

While I agree with a lot of what you are saying, I think I’d almost place MORE of the blame on the real DESIGNERS of the Jessica shoes or the Lindsay leggings. I mean, the stars are basically being handed money to slap their names on the clothing…it’s the designers who are selling out and approaching these stars with an offer to sell their designs. The stars are just doing what comes natural to them….taking the money. Its like if a small punk band puts out tons of records that don’t sell more than 2,000 copies. They finally want to gain some notoriety, so they sign to a big label tha will baically do the selling and marketing for them. In your case, the designers are the punk band and the stars are the record label
